The Secret Life of Bats 2026
About
Bats play an essential role in ecosystem health. They are a diverse group of mammals that have fascinating adaptations and behaviours.Join us for our talk where you will learn about your local bat species that often go unseen and unheard in the environment.
This session will cover where bats like to live, what they like to eat, adaptations to flight and how they navigate and communicate.
We will also talk about current threats to bat species and how you can help.
Our presenter will be Laura Owen, an ecologist who works with Wildlife Unlimited in Bairnsdale. Laura studied zoology and is passionate about bats. Laura's work includes field studies, research and community education.
When you register for the workshop, and while we have places left, we’ll send you an e-mail telling you how you can also book for the twilight walk where we’ll be able to show you how we detect bats that have ultrasonic calls (above our hearing range), look out for suitable bat habitat and hopefully see some bats in action.
We have limited places on the walk, but can accommodate more in the workshop. Our group is learning to use our own monitors, and will schedule more twilight walks during the autumn.
