'Sacred Angry Laughing' Readings & 'Reflections' Exhibition
About
Mag Merrilees - Author - Scared Angry Laughing is a lively, unruly collection of essays in which Margaret Merrilees reflects on a lifetime of activism, resistance, and attempts to heal the world. Through moments both political and personal—protests, arrests, awkward conversations, and careful environmental choices—she chronicles deliberate disobedience with humour and warmth, revealing how even “good girls” can become seasoned arrestees.Blending memoir, history, and social commentary, the essays explore how we live with difference and disagreement in alarming times. Merrilees reminds us that we are not the first to struggle for a better world, and that resistance can be heroic or quietly persistent. Carrying inherited knowledge of care, cooperation, and hope, the book argues that laughter is not frivolous but essential—a vital rule of survival and resistance.
Dee Basinski - Artist - My first painting emerged during a time of grief, inspired by clouds reflected in a puddle after my mother died. I took a year off work and began painting, though for many years I believed art was less important than my work in the community sector and the life I built living in the country after growing up in inner-city Melbourne. I focused on living out my values—caring for the environment, building in mud brick, and trying farming—yet I was always attentive to the light and colour of the landscape around me.
After retiring and moving to Pt Willunga, I finally had the opportunity to pursue art more fully. I joined workshops with local artists, explored a range of mediums including watercolour, gouache, oil, and acrylic, and continued painting the local landscape and seascapes, drawn to the sea, hills, and shifting light. More recently, I discovered abstract painting, which has challenged me while offering a sense of freedom and joy, allowing me to draw deeply on my understanding of colour, shape, line, and tone.
Join us for a fabulous afternoon of Celebration of life's fruits by these two talented women and enjoy readings from Mag's Book and view Dee's beautiful artwork.
