Falls Are Preventable: How Assistive Technology Can Help

Unicare Health Seminar : Defining Pressure Care Excellence

WEBINAR

Falls are often accepted as a normal part of ageing or disability, but they shouldn’t be. As a leading cause of injury, hospitalisation, and loss of independence, falls require informed, proactive prevention strategies.

This practical, clinically focused webinar explores how assistive technology can be integrated into evidence-informed falls prevention. Participants will review key falls risk factors and the application of seating, bathroom supports, electric profiling beds, pressure care mattresses, and wheelchair cushions.

The session also addresses falls risks associated with incorrect use of lift recliners and shower commodes, highlighting safe prescription, customisation, positioning, transfers, stability features, and maintenance to support safety, function, and independence across aged care and home-care settings.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe falls risks and prevention by identifying common causes of falls, key risk factors, and how assistive technology supports safer mobility and independence.
  • Explain the role of electric profiling beds and pressure care mattresses in supporting safety and comfort, including how sleep support surface features contribute to safer positioning, transfers, and reducing falls injury risk for individuals with limited mobility.
  • Identify falls risks related to wheelchair and lift recliner use, and describe how wheelchair cushions contribute to posture, stability, and falls prevention.
  • Implement strategies to reduce falls risk when using shower commodes, including appropriate prescription and customisation for safe transfers and function, use of stability-enhancing features, and awareness of essential commode maintenance.

This session is ideal for Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in assistive technology selection and prescription who want to strengthen their clinical reasoning and refresh their knowledge of equipment that supports safety, function, and independence in aged care and home-care settings.
