About
BLACKMAIL (1929)Directed by Alfred Hitchcock
Organist – David Bailey
Experience the brilliance of early cinema with Blackmail (1929), one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most important early films. Starring Anny Ondra and John Longden, this gripping thriller follows a young woman whose life unravels after a moment of self-defence leads to dangerous blackmail.
Blackmail was released in two formats - both as a silent film and also Britain’s first major sound film!
This silent format screening showcases Hitchcock’s bold innovation and techniques to heighten suspense and emotional impact. His inventive camera work and storytelling style laid the foundations for a legendary career.
With its compelling performances, dramatic tension, and historic significance, Blackmail remains a must-see classic, made even more powerful with live organ accompaniment.
Organist David Bailey will perform a newly composed live musical accompaniment on the TOSAQ Christie Cinema Pipe Organ in full view of the audience.
David Bailey
David Bailey is an Australian theatre organist, composer and silent film accompanist based in Brisbane with a musical style influenced heavily by the popular music of the early to mid-twentieth century. A theatre organist firstly, David’s main form of musical expression has always been connected to the silent film world, but in 2007 he brought this expertise back to the cinema and pursued an interest in silent film accompaniment. Since then, he has composed and performed scores for films from all over the world and every genre including many for the Australian Cinematheque at QAGOMA and Brisbane City Hall in addition to venues all around Australia. David strives to creatively reveal the vast musical resources of the theatre organ to modern audiences and offer a cinema experience that is novel yet nostalgic.
