Returning for its seventh year, Words Out West is a month-long celebration of storytelling, creativity, and connection across the Western Downs. From school programs and pub sessions to glamourous literary evenings and immersive retreats, this vibrant festival brings together acclaimed authors, poets and storytellers for unforgettable experiences.

School Days: Dalby Tuesday 2 June, Chinchilla Wednesday 3 June

Curiosity, creativity and enquiry without barriers - that's what Words Out West School Days are all about! Students are invited to engage with key literacy themes through a range of workshops, presentations, and hands-on activities.

Schooners & Stories: Jandowae Thursday 4 June, Miles Friday 5 June, Tara Saturday 6 June

Grab a Schooner, pull up a seat, and settle in for a cracking yarn with Ben Hannant.

Festival Weekend: Chinchilla Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 June 

Dive into the world of storytelling with an incredible lineup featuring Heather Morris, Virginia Trioli, and more. Enjoy immersive workshops, captivating sessions, engaging panel discussions and the unique opportunity to chat with your favourite authors. 

Books & Bubbles: A Night of Crime Chinchilla Saturday 13 June

Join Hedley Thomas and Matthew Condon for Books & Bubbles - a sparkling, suspense-filled evening as they share the stories behind some of Australia's most compelling investigations.

Writer’s Retreat: Bunya Mountains Saturday 20 June 

Set at the stunning Bunya Mountains, this retreat offers a day of inspiration and creativity in nature with two fabulous sessions. 

Short Story Competition: 11 March – 17 May (Online)
