×Occupational Violence and Aggression (SAFE Training)Course Description:
SAFE Training is the Eastern Health (EH), in-house, Occupational Violence and Aggression (OVA) Management education package.
The SAFE programs are designed to support staff in developing confidence and the ability to assist people in a non-threatening manner and respond safely and assertively to distressed and or aggressive behaviour in the healthcare environment. The SAFE programs are also designed to meet Eastern Health’s obligations to staff under the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) OVA Training guidelines (DHHS, 2017) and current EH policies and practice guidelines.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of the universal DHHS online learning package and relevant SAFE face to face session staff should be able to:
SAFE 1 & 2 - Lower Risk work areas, CLINICAL and NON-CLINICAL roles
Identify more useful engagement strategies
Apply empathetic communication principles
Identify client/visitor early warning signs for violent or aggressive behaviour (STAMP)
Confidently attempt verbal de-escalation using the TALK DOWN method
Enact personal safety/breakaway techniques (Breaks and Escapes)
Recall local CODE GREY response procedures
Support Code Grey Response Team on arrival at home unit/ward
Enact escalation and documentation procedures – VHIMS; File Alert; Management of Behaviours of Concern pathway
