Thinking Along with the Earth at Open Sanctuary
About
Led by Dr Susan Murphy, Zen Roshi, author of Minding the Earth, Mending the World (2014) and A Fire Runs Through All Things (2023) 2-3 May 2026Do you long to find a more hospitable fit with the place where we are, to cease standing somehow outside looking on at the way that everything moves together – except for us, our own minds positioned so stubbornly apart and isolate from the vivid life-world?
What would it be like to tune in to the deeper intimations of the place where we are, and find that to be inseparable from our most intimate state of being? And to begin to ‘think along with the Earth’, with a more indigenous cast of mind.
In this weekend, we’ll explore how the gift and practice of un-knowing helps navigate this vital shift of consciousness. The weekend will include meditation; an exploration of the Zen koan as a way past ourselves into a more roomy and awake mind; and a haiku-writing workshop.
It will end with an always surprising Council For All Beings -- honouring the life and work of the late Joanna Macy. We prepare for the powerful ritual of the Council by way of active dreaming into the more-than-human world, to listen in deeply so as to help give voice to the life of the earth, as it staggers under its burden of humanity’s choice of ‘living by damage’.* You will have a chance to let some creature or feature of the living earth find its way completely under your skin so as to become authorised to speak through you -- the voiceless becoming heard by the listening humans – at last!
*It was Daly Pulkara, late lawman of the Kimberley, who termed it this way.
