Join Yarrowee Leigh Catchment Group, Parks Victoria Project Officer Peta Glen, and Friends of Canadian Corridor/Friends of Upper Williamson’s Creek member Jane MacDonald for a family-friendly nocturnal insect survey at Woowookarung Regional Park.Discover the fascinating world of moths and nocturnal insects using UV light traps and white sheet displays. Learn survey methodology, record observations, and contribute to citizen science through the iNaturalist app.
Key dates
Primary session: Sunday 15 March, 7:00pm – 10:00pm (Woowookarung Lookout)
Follow-up session: Monday 16 March, 8:00am – 10:30am (sort specimens and pack down)
Participants can attend one or both sessions – whatever suits your schedule. Children welcome but remain the responsibility of attending adults.
Accessibility
Able-bodied participants only due to uneven ground and dark conditions.
What’s provided
Hire toilet on site. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and light snacks for supper. All survey equipment supplied.
What to bring
Keep cup, drinking water, fully charged phone/power bank, natural insect repellent, warm clothes, head torch/headlamp.
Detailed program
Sunday 15 March
7:20pm Walk to survey location
7:30pm Insect survey briefing and equipment setup
8:30pm Insect observations, iNaturalist demo and practice
9:30pm Pack up site (leave 1–2 overnight UV traps)
9:45pm Participants depart
Monday 16 March
8:00am Meet at lookout – welcome and safety briefing
8:15am Sort/count insects, record data, photograph specimens
9:30am Pack up gear
10:30am Site departure
