After Callan Park was made an institution in its own right in the late 1870s, construction of the new asylum began in 1880. This monumental change in the landscape was a long process which incorporated the NSW Inspector General of the Insane, English architects, American psychiatrists, and the NSW Colonial Architect. Callan Park created important links between the Lunacy Department and Sydney University, which in turn changed the face of medical education in NSW.
TOUR: After the talks join a tour of Kirkbride courtyard (rarely open to the public) led by James Rongen-Hall, Heritage Remediation Project Manager for the Ministry of Health.
