Martin Burd earned a Ph.D. studying reproduction in giant lobelias on the mountains of East Africa and spent a career researching sex in plants in Central America, Southeast Asia, and Australia. He was a lecturer at Monash University for many years and is now an honorary researcher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.
