OT Student series: Out-of-the-Box Wheelchair Prescription (CANCELLED)

This interactive session introduces occupational therapy students to the key principles involved in selecting and providing appropriate out-of-the-box wheelchairs. Using a person-centred approach, students will explore how individual factors and environmental contexts influence wheelchair selection and provision.

Participants will gain practical insight into the clinical reasoning required to match wheelchair features with the functional needs, preferences and environments of the people they support.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, students will be able to:

• Describe the purpose and key features of common out-of-the-box wheelchairs.
• Apply a person-centred approach to wheelchair selection.
• Identify key person factors such as physical abilities, functional needs and personal preferences relevant to wheelchair provision.
• Consider environmental factors including home and community settings that influence wheelchair suitability.
• Demonstrate clinical reasoning when matching an out-of-the-box wheelchair to an individual’s needs.

This session is designed for fourth or final-year occupational therapy students who want to build confidence in selecting and providing out-of-the-box wheelchairs to support safe, functional mobility for their future clients.
