Samuel Thawley Author Talk
About
Authenticity, alignment, and satisfaction: A presentation about writing novels with meaning based on life’s adventures. Samuel Thawley has pursued a life outside the ordinary, living and working in over fifteen places around the world in a wide range of organisations and in a broad mix of cultures. At points along the way he has been recognised for the skills of his analysis, his ability to engage with cultures, and the quality of his extra virgin olive oil. He is interested in everything about the world we live in.Samuel’s books draw deeply from real experiences—his mother’s childhood growing up in Tasmania, his grandfather’s career in the Church, and his own decades spent travelling widely and building communities through events, social clubs, and hosting.
For over forty years he has brought together people of all ages and backgrounds, finding creative energy in the diversity of their lives and stories. In a single twelve-month period post-Covid, he hosted nearly two thousand visitor-nights, cooking over two hundred varied dishes a month. His most unusual brush with fame was becoming the eponymous inspiration for a character and storyline in Downton Abbey: https://downtonabbey.fandom.com/wiki/Samuel_Thawley
As an author, Samuel aims to craft stories that feel real and contemporary. He is interested in how people’s identity—their psychology, character, and complexity—drive their stories.
