Nick O'Neill - Foreshores for the People (SOLD OUT)
About
6pm for 6:30pm Tuesday 21 AprilForeshores for the People by Nick O'Neill, launched by Bob Carr.
The decades-long fight to win public open space in Sydney's Inner West.
Today much of the stunning waterfront of Sydney Harbour in the Inner West – the traditional lands of the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation – are parklands and walkways cherished by locals and tourists alike.
Foreshores for the People tells the inspiring story of how local residents helped secure waterfront land between Darling Harbour and Iron Cove for the people. Today’s public parklands are the result of the tireless efforts of local residents who helped fund court cases, lobby ministers, and maintain public commitment to the campaign.
This beautifully illustrated book documents the history of these spaces and the people who fought for them for over 40 years. This is a story of success but also of caution: although much has been achieved, still more needs to be done to guard against any further privatisation of hard-won public spaces.
Nick O’Neill is a former human rights lawyer, legal academic and author, and public servant. A law reformer in Papua New Guinea, he introduced the first human rights course taught in an Australian law school, also teaching administrative and constitutional law. Among other roles, Nick served as Deputy Mayor of Leichhardt Council and President of the NSW Guardianship Tribunal.
Former Australian Foreign Minister and NSW Minister for Planning, Bob Carr is the longest continuously serving Premier in NSW’ history. A distinguished scholar, conservationist, law reformer and author of five books, he is currently Chair of the Australian Heritage Council, Chair of the Museums of History New South Wales and a board member of Sydney Water.
