Jessie Street Luncheon 2026

Jessie Street Luncheon 2026

The International Order in Retreat: What it Means for Middle Powers

The international order is fraying. Long-standing assumptions about stable rules, effective multilateralism, and predictable constraints on power are under threat.  We face active great-power rivalry, more coercive statecraft and a world that is increasingly transactional.

What does this shift mean for middle powers like Australia?

How do we protect our interests and values when the rules are contested, and enforcement is uneven? And what does credible leadership look like when cooperation is harder, but still essential?

Join the Jessie Street Trust for a conversation with the Hon Bob Carr, who will explore recent changes in the international system, why it matters now, and the practical choices middle powers face. He will also examine the impact of the fractured geopolitical environment on complex global challenges that demand cooperative responses.

An invitation to sponsor a school student

When you book tickets, we also invite you, as a Jessie Street Trust supporter, to sponsor one or more school students to attend the lunch. Attending this event at an impressionable stage of life inspires them to strive for social justice and to carry Jessie's legacy forward. Your generous sponsorship will enable school students, for whom cost is a barrier, to join us at the lunch.

About

The Annual Jessie Street Trust Fundraising Lunch, held since 1989, is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Jessie Street, a prominent Australian activist and feminist. This event promotes social justice, gender equality, and human rights, reflecting the values and causes that Jessie Street passionately advocated for throughout her life.

The lunch serves as a platform for discussing the issues that Jessie fought for, and that we are still fighting for today. Distinguished speakers, including activists, scholars, and public figures, share their insights on contemporary issues related to social justice and gender equality. Attendees engage in meaningful discussions, network with like-minded individuals, and support initiatives aligned with Jessie Street's vision of a fair and equitable society.
