About

National Trust - Australian Heritage Festival Event hosted by Williamstown Historical Society Inc.

Exploring 100 Years of Buildings, Businesses and Characters on Nelson Place, Williamstown.

Running along the waterfront of historic Nelson Place, this remarkable streetscape tells the story of more than a century and a half of life in one of Victoria’s earliest port towns.

In 1926, a row of fifty buildings stood together along what locals simply called “the Front.” Remarkably, every one of those buildings still stands today. Many were already decades old at the time, having been built during the bustling maritime years of nineteenth-century Williamstown, when ships crowded the harbour and the town thrived as the gateway to Melbourne.

Over the following century the Front experienced cycles of prosperity and decline. It was once a lively shopping strip filled with grocers, outfitters, banks, boarding houses and hotels serving sailors, dock workers and local families. In the 1960s the area faced uncertain times, as surrounding neighbourhoods were dramatically altered through government “slum clearance” programs that saw many nearby buildings demolished. Yet the historic row along Nelson Place endured.

By the late twentieth century the precinct found a new identity. As appreciation for heritage grew, the old waterfront buildings were rediscovered and adapted, becoming a vibrant destination for restaurants, cafés and visitors drawn to the charm of the preserved nineteenth-century streetscape.

Join this heritage walk to explore the stories hidden behind the façades. Learn about the history of the buildings and the people who lived and worked in this important heritage treasure—merchants and mariners, publicans and shopkeepers, families and entrepreneurs—whose lives shaped the character of Williamstown’s famous waterfront.

Along the way, discover how Nelson Place has evolved from a busy maritime commercial strip into one of the most intact historic streets in Victoria, where the past still lines the street, building by building.
