Demby McKenzie & His Perfectly Sized Band
About
Rising musical theatre performer Demby McKenzie is returning to Warrnambool with a powerful new live show, bringing together world-class training, local roots, and a deep connection to the region’s vibrant theatre community.Set to perform at Kings College Warrnambool on April 16th, Demby McKenzie & His Perfectly Sized Band delivers a dynamic two-act concert celebrating some of the greatest voices in modern music history.
A graduate of the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), where he completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre, McKenzie has spent recent years refining his craft among Australia’s next generation of elite performers. His credits include productions such as Spring Awakening, Heathers, and Curtains, working under some of the country’s leading directors - including with the Australian Shakespeare Company.
But his story begins much closer to home.
Raised in a family deeply embedded in the South West’s theatre scene, McKenzie grew up surrounded by performance, creativity and community. Once a teenager with eyes only on sporting success, Demby tried his hand at stage performing. He traded the cricket bat for a microphone, netball bibs for tap shoes and joined the rest of his family on stage - spending his teen years performing in over 20 local amateur productions before answering the call to higher training at VCA.
Now, he returns to the region with a show that reflects both his professional training and lifelong passion for live performance.
A Show in Two Acts
The first act sees McKenzie step into the world of legendary entertainer Bobby Darin, paying tribute to the two-time Grammy Award winner through timeless classics including Splish Splash, Dream Lover, Beyond the Sea and Mack the Knife. Blending music with storytelling, the performance captures Darin’s charisma, humour and remarkable versatility.
In the second act, the show shifts into a contemporary celebration of Michael Bublé & Josh Groban - as well as a few surprises.. featuring beloved songs such as Sway, Everything, The Prayer and You Raise Me Up. Backed by a full live band, the performance bridges big band swing with modern orchestral pop.
Joining McKenzie on stage is The Perfectly Sized Band, a collective of accomplished local musicians:
Jane McSween (Piano), Geoff Kilminster (Bass), Ricky Beall (Drums), Charlie Young (Trumpet), Chris Stewart (Saxophone), Paul Shurvell (Trombone), and Phil Jones (Guitar).
Also joining the crew includesIan Bail (Sound/Recording Engineer) & April Body (Lighting Designer), as well as Fitz Media & Joseph Lim who will be capturing the event. These in demand locals highlight Demby’s desire to foster local performance and production, aiming to showcase just exactly what the South West is capable of.
With a voice spanning jazz, musical theatre and contemporary styles, McKenzie brings a rare versatility to the stage - combining technical precision with genuine emotional connection.
More than just a concert, the performance offers a journey through eras of music, delivered with warmth, storytelling and unmistakable stage presence.
