2026 Geelong Junior Open
About
The Geelong Chess Club is proud to present the first Geelong Junior Open, a weekend tournament designed to encourage and develop junior chess players across the Greater Geelong region.The event welcomes players from Geelong, the western suburbs of Melbourne, and across Victoria, and aims to provide a fun, competitive environment for young players of all levels.
Players must know the rules of chess and be able to record their moves using chess notation.

Venue:
St Joseph’s College Geelong

Format: 5 Round Swiss
Time Control: 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move
Rating: Australian Chess Federation (ACF) Rated
Forfeiture Time: 10 minutes from the scheduled start.
Accelerated Pairings:
If the tournament reaches 40 or more players, accelerated Swiss pairings will be used for the first two rounds.
Half-Point Byes:
One half-point bye is available in Rounds 1–3 and must be requested at least one week before the tournament.
No half-point byes are available in Rounds 4 or 5.
Entries: Limited to 100 players. Early registration is recommended.

Early Bird (before 1 May 2026): $70
Standard Entry: $90
Entries received after 10 May incur a $20 late fee if accepted.

Additional prizes may be awarded depending on the number of entries.
Players may win only one cash prize. If a player qualifies for multiple prizes, the highest value prize will be awarded.

Under 12 – Players born 2014 or later
Under 10 – Players born 2016 or later
Schedule
Saturday 16 May
Round 1 – 10:00 AM
Round 2 – 12:15 PM
Round 3 – 2:30 PM
Sunday 17 May
Round 4 – 10:00 AM
Round 5 – 12:15 PM
Prizegiving: approximately 2:30 – 3:00 PM
Players should arrive at least 15 minutes before Round 1.
Important Information
Electronic devices such as mobile phones, smart watches, or tablets are not permitted in the playing area.
Players requiring an electronic notation device must obtain approval from the arbiter before the start of the tournament.
If a player makes two illegal moves during the same game, the game will be declared lost.
Parents and spectators are not permitted in the playing area while games are in progress.
