Lysistrata
About
The Creative Drama & Arts group and the Greek Community of Melbourne return with one of the most beloved classics of ancient comedy: Lysistrata by Aristophanes. A bold, cheeky, and surprisingly modern play, Lysistrata imagines what happens when the women of Greece, tired of endless war, declare a sex strike to force the men to make peace.About the Production
Performed in Greek with English live captioning, this production opens the doors to both Greek‑speaking audiences and friends who don’t speak the language but love theatre, comedy, and a good night out. The live English surtitles mean you can bring non‑Greek‑speaking partners, family, and colleagues and share every joke and punchline together.
Set in the intimate Doncaster Playhouse, the audience is drawn right into the action as the women seize the Acropolis, barricade themselves in, and test their resolve against increasingly desperate men. Expect larger‑than‑life characters, physical humour, and a story that feels uncannily relevant to today’s politics, relationships, and power struggles.
For Melbourne’s Greek community, Lysistrata is a chance to reconnect with the outrageous, subversive spirit of ancient Athenian comedy and to celebrate Greek language and culture in a shared, live setting. For the wider community, it is an irresistible invitation to discover why this 2,400‑year‑old comedy still shocks, delights, and inspires audiences around the world.
