This presentation outlines the neuropsychological symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases that cause dementia. Dr Smith explores changes that can occur in cognition, social cognition, behaviour and mental health as a result of developing a neurodegenerative disease. He also explores how these changes can impact upon decision-making capacity and identifies non-pharmacological strategies and therapies that can be used to manage these symptoms.Upon completion of this event, participants should be able to: 1) Identify the key neuropsychological symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases 2) Explain how neurodegenerative diseases impact cognitive functioning, social cognition, behaviour, and emotional wellbeing 3) understand that concept of decision-making capacity and how it applies to dementia, and 4) Apply non-pharmacological strategies to manage neuropsychological symptoms in people with dementia.
About the Presenter
Dr Luke Smith is a qualified clinical neuropsychologist who consults privately across Victoria and Tasmania. He is also employed as a consultant at Swinburne University and a mindfulness tutor at Monash University. Dr Smith also worked as a behaviour management consultant and counsellor for Dementia Australia in Victoria and South Australia. He has a research and clinical interest in neurodegenerative diseases.
