About
Participants are introduced to safety-focussed, client-centred and trauma informed practice, to include:• Recognising and Responding to DFV,
• Recognising and responding to non-lethal strangulation
Building skills and confidence to reflect on professional practices in a family law setting, recognising and responding to DFV and supporting our clients across various sectors.
Facilitators:
Betty Taylor:
Betty Taylor is the Founder of the Red Rose Foundation and has worked across the domestic and family violence sector for over 35 years. Her career spans service development and management, training, advocacy, law reform, consultation and collaboration.
Betty established the Queensland Domestic Violence Action Group with several other legends from the dv/sa sectors, with the aim of lobbying the Queensland Government for the establishment of a domestic violence death review board and a stand-alone offence of strangulation within the Criminal Code
Professor Brian Sullivan:
Brian is a member of the Red Rose Foundation. He is also a member of the Qld Police Service Domestic and Family Violence Advisory Committee. He was an invited Qld Delegate for the National Summit on Women’s Safety Forum – Perpetrator Intervention and Working with Men. Sullivan is the Senior Lecturer and Head of Course for the Domestic and Family Violence Practice Program at Central Queensland University. Red Rose Foundation Australia.
Sono Leone:
Sono Leone is a Butchulla and Garrawa woman, proud of her Tongan and South Sea Islander heritage. She is the founder and CEO of Strong Women Talking, a grassroots organization for First Nations women based in Brisbane that supports women to heal from the trauma of family and domestic violence.
Yasmin Khan:
Yasmin Khan is the Director and Founder of The Bangle Foundation, an unfunded domestic abuse support service for South Asian women. The organisation is nearly 15 years old, and in the time, TBF has been contacted by thousands of women from across Australia and from women in South Asia, who have been abandoned or left without travel documents. Yasmin is a Churchill Fellow, 2017 Australian of the Year, Local Hero (Qld) winner and 2015 Multicultural State Champion. She is also completing her PhD on ‘In-law perpetrated domestic abuse in Australia’s South Asian community.
Topics include:
• Introduction to DFV:
• The Duluth wheel: The concept of Power & Control.
• Coercive Control and how recognise within DFV.
• Consideration of cultural factors and ‘by and for’ services.
• The Deadly ‘S’ - findings from the DFV Death Review process – recognising and responding to high-risk indicators.
• Workshopping specific needs relating to staff confidence based on case studies that resonate with the participants.
• Existing and new legislation and their effects on professional processes and practice, with case studies.
