Rotary Rallies for Kids in Care backing the John Hunter Hospital School.
Each year, more than 1,500 young people across the Hunter New England Local Health District find themselves in hospital at a time when they should be in the classroom, learning alongside their peers. For these children and their families, illness or injury brings enormous disruption, not only to their health and wellbeing, but also to their education.
That’s where the John Hunter Hospital School (JHHS) steps in. Established in 1995, JHHS is a NSW Department of Education public school dedicated to providing continuity of education for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 while they receive medical treatment. Whether supporting a child undergoing oncology treatment, working with young people in the Nexus Mental Health Unit, or teaching siblings of patients, the school ensures that no child misses out on learning during one of the most challenging times in their lives.
In 2024 alone, nearly 63,890 children aged 4–18 received care at John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
That’s why Rotary is stepping up. The Rotary Club of Charlestown has been proudly supporting the school for years.
This initiative, branded as “Rotary for Kids in Care”, would not go toward salaries or core operations.
Instead, every dollar would be used to provide resources, comfort, and enrichment for children during their hospital journey.
Our Student Packs are designed and equipped for young people in our setting to be used both during and after their
hospital admission. The Student Packs aim to bring connection of education to a clinical space. It supports our ward
teachers to break up the hospital feel of the room and gain connection through the familiarity of education.
The total of each Student Pack comes to $15-20 (dependent on the age related book that is included).
Annual cost distributing approximately 1000 bags every year is $20,000
The following is included in our packs:
•JHHS Tote Bag, •Visual Arts Diary, •Mathematical Mind Activity Book, •1 x ruler, •1 x pencil, •1 x pen. •20 x counters. •1 x stress ball, •1 x packet of pencils, •1 x packet of cards, •2 x dice, •1 x age-related book, •1 x bookmark
Additional support includes:
•Supplying laptops, iPads, art materials, and learning resources
•Establishing a Rotary Resilience Library for children and siblings
•Funding gift cards for families facing financial strain from travel and hospital costs
•Creating “Moments of Joy” packs filled with puzzles, headphones, and small comforts
•Supporting volunteers to serve as reading buddies, creative workshop leaders, or event helpers
The Benefits:
The benefits of this partnership extend well beyond the walls of the hospital. For children, it means continuity of learning, reduced anxiety when returning to their regular schools, and small moments of happiness during long hospital stays. For Rotary, it means visibility across the district, stronger connections with local communities, and an inspiring, unifying project that brings every club together in service.
Let’s make a meaningful difference for kids in care.
