Catholic Imagination: Getting a better view with Fr Stephen
About
Fr Stephen Wang, Rector of the Venerable English College in Rome, has a long-standing relationship with Melbourne. Having spoken to with Melbourne’s pilgrims on the World Youth Day Emerging Leaders Program in 2023, encouraging them to ‘be open to God’s prompting’ while on pilgrimage, he followed up with a visit in 2024 and again this year.Since we are a pilgrim people, Fr Stephen poses a question for all of us to reflect on: ‘What is it that you’re seeking?’ As pilgrims in life’s journey, how do we share with others that which matters most?
Fr Stephen’s work as coordinator of the Sycamore program echoes the story of Zacchaeus, so curious about Jesus that he climbs a sycamore tree to get a better view. When he finally meets Jesus, they begin a conversation and Zacchaeus’ life is changed forever. The sycamore tree seems to be the perfect image of something that helps others to get a wider perspective on life and faith.
Living in Rome, Fr Stephen is well aware of the living history around him that allows him to explore the foundations of Christian leadership, evangelisation and how the mission of Jesus Christ might be lived in today’s world.
