Lecture title:
Modern Sea Power: Lessons from Global Conflict and Implications for Australian Naval Strategy
Overview:
Recent conflicts demonstrate that maritime power is once again central to the conduct and outcome of war. From the Black Sea to the Persian Gulf and the Western Pacific, naval forces are operating in increasingly contested environments characterised by long-range precision strike, uncrewed systems, grey-zone coercion and persistent pressure on maritime trade and infrastructure.
This lecture examines how the character of maritime conflict is changing and what these developments mean for Australia as a maritime trading nation and middle power. It will explore emerging operational lessons in areas such as sea denial, maritime domain awareness, integrated air and missile defence, protection of shipping and ports and the growing importance of alliances and partnerships at sea.
Drawing on historical insights and contemporary case studies, the lecture will consider whether Australia is adapting at sufficient speed and scale, and what strategic choices now confront Australian naval planners as they seek to balance deterrence, resilience and war-fighting readiness in a more dangerous maritime environment.
