RCE ANZAC night 2026 - "4th Light Horse Regiment in WW1"
About
The Annual ANZAC meeting for the Rotary Club of Eltham will be held on Thursday 9 April 2026 in the Upstairs Function Room at the Montmorency RSL.This year our guest speaker is Peter McWilliam. Peter has been a member of the 4th Light Horse Memorial Association for 18 years. Peter will talk on the service of his Grandfather Arthur Leslie Hanna DSO, who joined the 4th Light Horse Regiment as one of the originals in August 1914. He served in Gallipoli and in the Egypt, Sinai and Palestine Campaign, transferring to a senior role with the British Indian Army from October 1917 until 1922. Peter knew his grandfather well and he taught Peter a love of horses and of horsemanship.
The 4th Light Horse Regiment was formed at Broadmeadows as the Divisional Cavalry Regiment for the 1st Australian Division A.I.F. on 11 August 1914.
MOTTO: “Endure and Fight”. The Regiment was the only Australian unit to serve on three fronts: Gallipoli, Egypt & Palestine, and the Western Front. The Regiments' achievements were many, including the legendary Charge of Beersheba in 1917 and the first allied troops to enter Damascus in 1918.
