Comedy Country
About
Hosted by award winning emcee and comedian, Lori Bell, students of Adelaide and Flinders Universities come together to present their own original material developed in just five weeks! This is a public presentation for first-time comics and cabaret artists, who have made their routines while exploring the ways that comedy can act as a form of civic expression.Comedy is used to inspire change, turn complexity into simple, compelling and often popular ideas. Comic artists are also seen as radical interlocutors, adding important or grounding commentary to public discussion. It is immediate, in the present-tense and a way to have your say about society. Comedy can be a great way to express your views, because even if an audience doesn’t agree with you, when they laugh, they have likely understood your point of view.
These performance students have been introduced to core comic principles, mining life experiences to create a short routine and have a say. There’s no fourth wall to hide behind, no director to consult and no script to learn. Standing behind the microphone offers a forum to respond to the world, immediately and honestly, and they’d love to have a generous and supportive crowd to play with.
This public performance is the culmination of a series of workshops for students, offered as part of a research project exploring comedy as an agent of change in Australia, funded by the Australian Research Council, entitled Comedy Country (Project ID: LP220100196). The Centre of Democracy, History Trust of SA is a key partner on this project.
