About the Artworks

Marrŋu

By Datjuluma Guyula

Etching on paper - 53 x 40cm

This beautiful artwork from the Yirrkala Gallery in North East Arnhem Land, is an etching on paper by artist Datjuluma Guyula, printed on Hahnemühle paper.  The artwork relates to the Yirritja moiety and the Maŋgalili clan.

This etching identifies Marrŋu, the Ancestral Possum totem of the Maŋgalili clan, at Djarrakpi through the sacred Maŋgalili clan designs carried on the possum’s body. These designs represent the flowing sands of the great dunes at Djarrakpi and reference the many significant events that occurred there during the creation period. The imagery holds deep cultural knowledge, connecting land, ancestral beings and clan identity.

Kauwal Matara – Many Hands
 By Judith Franklin
Acrylic on cotton canvas - 76 × 60 cm

Kauwal Matara - meaning Many Hands - speaks to a truth held at the heart of Country and passed down through generations: we are stronger together. This work tells a story of community, care and healing, expressed through the powerful symbol of reaching hands.

Each hand in the painting represents someone offering connection and support - family, friends, Elders and carers - particularly for those facing illness, including cancer and chronic disease. These hands do not stand alone; they overlap, connect and weave pathways, reflecting how healing journeys are shaped through networks of shared strength, hope and recovery.

The circles and lines throughout the artwork symbolise unity and the shared pathways of life, reminding us that healing is not an individual experience but a collective one, nurtured through love, listening and guidance. Elements of the natural world - trees, waterholes, tracks and birds - anchor the story in Country, reinforcing the deep connection between wellbeing, land and one another.

Kauwal Matara celebrates the simple yet profound act of reaching out. Together, many hands can hold, guide and carry those in need, affirming that healing is a shared journey.

Judith Franklin is a contemporary Indigenous artist and proud Darkinjung woman living on the Central Coast. Her work draws strongly on cultural knowledge, connection to Country and the importance of community, using art as a means of storytelling, healing and shared understanding.
