One in a million refugee stories with Shankar
About
Join us for a special Refugee Week 2026 event featuring refugee advocate and ambassador Shankar.Shankar’s family fled Sri Lanka in 1987 after his father, a philosophy lecturer, was detained due to suspicion over his engagement with Tamil students and activists. Welcomed to Australia by a kind Mount Waverley community, they were able to rebuild their lives. For over fifteen years, Shankar has championed inclusive communities and now serves as a Commissioner for the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Deputy Chairperson of the Migrant Workers Centre.
This event aligns with Refugee Week 2026: A Million Stories, a national celebration marking one million humanitarian visas issued since 1947: a milestone honouring the diverse stories that shape modern Australia.
Run in partnership with the Refugee Council of Australia as part of the powerful Refugee Stories for Change program.
