David Bentley - DB3 + 1 Classic Swingin' Blues & New Orleans
About
Singer-songwriter and musician David Bentley brings a rich bouillabaisse of smoky jazz and cool blues to Ruby’s with his band The David Bentley Trio +1.DB3+1 comprises David Bentley (keyboards and vocals), Nathan Goldman (percussion), Andrew Shaw (acoustic bass), and Mark Spencer (tenor sax), with cellist Danielle Bentley an occasional but increasingly popular addition. It’s a swinging, spirited, and multi-faceted lineup that centres on Bentley’s original material while bringing fresh harmonic colour to blues and jazz standards, along with a distinctive take on classic New Orleans grooves.
The set will feature Bentley’s relaxed reinterpretation of his original composition "In a Broken Dream", the chart-topping Python Lee Jackson hit. Now firmly established as a rock classic, the original recording reached number three on the UK charts and has since appeared in films and documentaries, including Breaking the Waves and the recent Baywatch movie. More recently, the song found new life through a globally successful remix by Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky, re-titled "Everyday".
Bentley’s songwriting has been recorded by an impressive range of artists, including Rod Stewart (who also sang on the original recording), Jimmy Barnes, Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran, Margaret RoadKnight, Joe Bonamassa, Kathryn Williams, Hannah Jones, and Becky Bond, among others.
With a career spanning decades, Bentley’s musical journey covers an expansive range. His trio backed jazz legends Milt Jackson and Phil Woods during the vibrant era of Brisbane’s Cellar Club. His jazz-blues band held a long-running residency at the Port Office Hotel, while Bentley’s Blues Review—featuring the late Wiley Reed—became a crowd favourite at the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival.
His 2006 album "Last Man Standing" received national airplay on ABC Radio National and was selected for the network’s annual showcase of outstanding, hard-to-find recordings. Since then, he has released two critically acclaimed trio albums, "DB3: The Leopard Lodge Sessions" and "DB3: The Lake Sessions", along with "Every Day Songs", a collection of original material. A retrospective album drawn from a decade of live recordings at the Brisbane Jazz Club is also on the way.
DB3+1 create a sound that blends sophisticated jazz with the spirit of New Orleans street music; an engaging mix of jazz standards, blues, and original compositions not to be missed.
