AI in Education: Built for the Next Generation of Teachers
About
You're about to enter classrooms where AI is already changing how students learn, how teachers plan, and what it means to teach well. Created for pre-service teachers across Western Australia, this event invites you into the conversation early, because your voice matters in shaping what comes next.
The day opens with a deep dive into AI and education from one of the leading voices in the field, Dr Sara Ratner, who leads the AI in Education at Oxford University model (AIEOU) and has contributed to the UNESCO AI Competency Framework for Teachers. This session will explore the current global expertise and knowledge base, research, practicing teacher perspectives, and what they mean for classroom practice. With the aim of shaping your ability to navigate AI as a confident, critically minded educator. Western Australia is also home to exciting research being undertaken around AI in K–12 education, and this event is an opportunity for pre-service teachers to engage with that local expertise alongside the international perspectives on offer.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping classrooms worldwide, presenting both significant challenges, such as safeguarding academic integrity, and extraordinary opportunities, including the potential to advance educational equity. While WA schools and universities are experimenting with AI, there is a need for timely research translation, cross-sector knowledge sharing, and coordinated policy guidance. Dr Ratner’s residency will address these needs by bridging research, policy, and practice, helping ensure AI literacy reaches all WA students and educators.

This is a cross-institutional moment bringing together pre-service teachers from all five WA universities, alongside researchers, faculty, and practicing educators. You'll connect with the AI research happening right here in Western Australia, alongside global perspectives on where education is heading. The goal is to help you build the knowledge, confidence, and critical lens to make your own decisions about AI in your classroom, with strong pedagogy and equitable access always in the driver's seat.
