Artist in Residence Showcase
About
You are invited to an exclusive afternoon of sonic exploration at The Cube (Flinders Ambisonic Sound Studio). This showcase, a highlight of the SPACER Sound Symposium, will feature the culminating research and creative works of Assemblage artists-in-residence Basil Hogios and Jesse Budel. We are thrilled to feature the work of Basil Hogios, our 2025 Artist in Residence. An accomplished composer, architect, and audio technologist, Basil spent his residency developing "Re-Present : Re-Transmit." Baz’ ambitious project investigated the role of immersive audio in the musical dramaturgies of text-based drama. Building on his recent collaboration with Dr. Chris Hurrell (which utilised the "The Cube" to reconstruct Shakespeare’s "lost music" from The Tempest), Basil will demonstrate a new methodology for performer interaction within 3D sound environments.
Complementing Baz’s project, 2022 Artist in Residence, Jesse Budel will then present his recent work. A celebrated South Australian composer-performer and academic, Jesse will present his ambisonic soundscape composition, sanctuary x mill. This piece is an immersive multichannel surround sound work that connects the instruments and soundscapes of two ruined piano sanctuaries – The Murray Bridge Piano Sanctuary at Murray Bridge, South Australia, and the Piano Mill at Harrigan’s Lane, Willson’s Downfall, NSW.
This showcase will be an opportunity for both artists to demonstrate how their cutting-edge music experiments (Basil’s spatial dramaturgy and Jesse’s acoustic ecology) are "dispersed" through immersive audio.
The afternoon will be a rare opportunity to experience the cutting edge of sound design and storytelling within one of the world’s most advanced audio facilities.
Join us for an afternoon of innovation within creative practice research, as we expand the possibilities within Flinders Ambisonic Studio.
