J.S. Bach’s famous exploration of the major and minor keys in the Well-Tempered Clavier is a kaleidoscopic display of Bach’s facility in all facets of baroque music-making. Each prelude is succeeded by a masterly fugue—the ultimate vehicle for polyphonic writing.
Chopin’s collection of preludes detaches the genre from a prefatory role and presents them sometimes as mere fragments. They precede one another but also reflect back to Bach with all the poetic spirit of the 19th century.
New York-based Australian pianist Laurence Cummings has a Bachelor’s (CUNY Brooklyn College) and a Master’s (CUNY Queens College) in Music Performance. His major teachers were Jeffrey Biegel and Yuri Kim, as well as a semester in New Paltz studying with Vladimir Feltsman.
