The Science of Gymnastics
About
Welcome to The Science of Gymnastics, presented by Igor Bespalov—FIG 3 Brevet Elite MAG Coach and esteemed FIG presenter. This multi-part series continues a line of workshops that ran last year, exploring the fascinating intersection of physics, anatomy, and technique that makes gymnastics both an art and a science. Across the sessions, we will examine the biomechanical principles underpinning Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG & WAG) skills. Each presentation highlights the role of biomechanics in skill execution and progression, offers practical strategies for injury prevention, and provides technical breakdowns to support safe and effective learning.
Session 1 will focus on turn sequences on the high bar and uneven bars, including half turns, blind and top changes, and a dedicated section on flyaway dismounts. We will examine the biomechanics, technical execution, and key training considerations that make these individual skills both effective and safe to perform.
Session 2 will explore twisting in saltos, including both forward and backward twisting skills. This session will focus on understanding body rotation, spatial awareness, and technique refinement to maximize performance while minimizing risk.
