Earth Building in the Construction Industry at The Secret Garden Community Hub on Western Sydney University Hawkesbury CampusThis workshop offers a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity for construction professionals to build technical knowledge of earth building systems, with a focus on rammed earth. It combines industry relevant theory with hands on experience, addressing material selection, construction methods, durability, and practical on site considerations aligned with contemporary construction practice and low carbon sustainability goals.
Technical Focus
The workshop explores earth building as a viable construction method, with emphasis on rammed earth and related unfired earth techniques. Participants engage with material performance, formwork and compaction principles, and emerging bio stabilised approaches, supported by practical activities that reinforce applied learning and professional skill development.
Secret Garden Community Hub – Project Context
Learning is grounded in active projects at the Secret Garden Community Hub, which has hosted ongoing earth building works since 2013. The site includes the Barn, community buildings such as a café and kitchen, entry structures, and smaller garden and landscape buildings.
Across these projects, techniques including rammed earth, mudbrick, cob, light earth, wattle and daub, and earth rendering have been applied at different scales. Together, these works provide real world examples of construction sequencing, buildability, labour coordination, and long term performance, directly supporting CPD outcomes relevant to the construction sector.
