The energy transition is known to be intensive in critical raw materials and must not lead to replacing the current dependence on fossil fuels with a dependence on raw materials. It must be based on assumed sovereignty over the necessary materials and a quest toward resource efficiency at each stage of a circular economy of materials.This presentation will first illustrate how supply/demand and supply chain risk analysis can support national and European strategies. It will also illustrate how key-enabling technologies can facilitate the transformation of linear material value chains into circular ones.
The second part of this presentation will focus on the circularity of battery materials. The replacement of critical materials for battery development is strategically addressed by developing new post Li-ion chemistries without Ni, Co, Li, and Cu, such as Na or K-ion batteries. Additionally, the reuse of recycled inputs from production scraps or end-of-life batteries is being explored. Intensive research is ongoing to improve the electrochemical performance of high-energy-density batteries and to develop low-cost, low-environmental-impact batteries. After a brief introduction to CEA's R&D facilities, the presentation will focus on the reuse of purified black mass lixiviates for the synthesis of advanced cathode active materials (PCAM and CAM). It will also evaluate the impact of the nature of impurities on overall performance.

Stéphanie RICHE is presently head of the “Circular Economy of Materials” program at CEA Energy Division.
Stéphanie Riché hold an engineering degree from Centrale Supélec. She began her career in 2000, working at HP Labs and SFR Innovation Labs. In 2008, she joined CEA-Leti, where she hold several management positions. She played a key role in the setup and execution of multiple technology transfer programs in the fields of energy, IoT, and telecommunications systems.
Since 2023, Stéphanie has been leading the “Circular Economy of Materials” program of the CEA Energy Division. This program drives the roadmap for the circular economy of materials required for low carbon energy systems and components such as batteries, electric machine (including magnets), PV, hydrogen and nuclear technologies. To improve the circularity of materials, CEA’s research focuses on metal extraction, refining and recycling processes with unique expertise in pyro and hydrometallurgy, additive manufacturing applied to the production of mechanical components with reduced material demand to eco-designed flexible electronics.
Dr. Caroline CELLE is a researcher at CEA LITEN in the Battery Division. She received her Ph.D. in 2005 from the University of Lyon 1 (France) in the field of polymer chemistry. She subsequently joined CEA/LITEN as a researcher in 2006. As an expert since 2018 and senior CEA expert since 2024, she had devoted many years to the integration of high-aspect-ratio nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes or metallic nanowires) into functional electronic and optoelectronic devices. Her current research focuses on the development and the study of materials for energy applications related to electrochemical storage (solid-state battery electrolytes – fuel cell catalysts). She has led several national, industrial, and European projects. She is the author and co-author of 45 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 29 patents. Since 2020, she has been Head of the Materials Laboratory (60 people staff) focusing their activity on the synthesis and characterization of active materials and electrolytes for Li ion and post-Li ion batteries.
