Bright Eyed Brown Butterfly Restoration Project
About
Chinese Spring, nestled in the scenic landscape of Trentham, is the focus of an inspiring ecological restoration project. Led by Hepburn Shire Council and local Landcare groups under the Healthy Coliban Catchment partnership, the project aims to restore native habitat and improve water quality along the upper Coliban River—particularly for the rare Bright-eyed Brown Butterfly. This three-year initiative is guided by clear goals: stabilise eroding streambanks, enhance biodiversity, and build climate resilience through native reforestation. Site preparation began with the removal of invasive weeds and willows. In recent months, Landcare volunteers, alongside Council staff, planted 200 native understory tube stock, followed by mulching and protective guards to help seedlings establish.
The benefits are already becoming visible. Clearer springs, returning native birds and frogs, and a rejuvenated ecosystem point to the success of this work. Over 6,000 native trees, shrubs, and grasses will be planted by the project’s end, creating lasting habitat and climate protection for the region.
Community involvement is central to the project’s success, with residents playing a hands-on role. Another planting day is planned for May—an opportunity for locals to contribute to this meaningful transformation.
