Moriarty's Passage | Melvin Freestone
About
*This is a free event*Moriarty and his wife, Kathleen, are driven by a desire to escape the hardships of their past and to seek a brighter future for their three children, Sean, Roisin, and Aisling. Moriarty's Passage tells the story of the life journey of the Moriarty family, focusing on their migration from Ireland to Australia, their struggles and triumphs, and the inevitable adapatation and evolution of their identitities within their new cultural landscape.
Moriarty's Passage is an intergenerational family odyssey expressed in evocative vignettes. Personal growth, family dynamics, cultural evolution, and community resilience are embedded in the adventures, challenges, and the spirit of enterprise of this Irish immigrant family, explored through generations within Australia's diverse social and environmental landscapes.
Dr. Melvin Freestone migrated with his family to Australia from Ireland in 1977. After extensive work in education at federal and state levels he retired in 2008 as principal of Montagu Bay Primary School. Since that time Melvin has worked in a voluntary capacity assisting educational initiatives in India, Nepal, Thailand, Brunei and the United States. In Tasmania he was President and founding member of Project Hahn Inc. which ran wilderness therapy programs for young people who were ‘at risk’ or disadvantaged. Melvin has written numerous educational resources including the full-length books – A Practical Guide to Technology – from pigs to optical fibres, and Thinking for Understanding. Moriarty’s Super Gene was his first venture into the field of fiction, followed by Moriarty’s Flight of Fancy, and now Moriarty's Passage (no previous reading required for the latter!).
