Comin’ in like a hurricane with beer and white lightning in its veins, the Southside Winter Warmer is back bringing three of our favourite country-folky-Bluesy-rootsy rockin’ and a rollin’ original Melbourne/Narrm bands together for one hell of a hot night in St Kilda.Sit, dance or sway the night away on Saturday 13 June from 7pm with the Alex Hamilton & the Highway, Chelsea Hotel and Mister Sippy on one amazing bill at MEMO Music Hall.
Alex Hamilton grew up in the backstreets of St Kilda and the shadows of the Esplanade Hotel, just around the corner from MEMO, making this show feel a little like home turf. Raised on Neil Young and Bob Dylan, with some Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen thrown in for good measure, Alex writes folky-country-rock songs that feel weathered, warm and unmistakably lived in.
A well-loved fixture of Melbourne’s music scene, Alex has played and collaborated with emerging and now major artists including Courtney Barnett, Foggy Notion and the Merri Creek Pickers. His songs bring to mind cowboy boots suede jackets and whisky by the fire, where poetic introspection meets choruses that stay with you long after. Backed by his cracking band, the Highway is stacked with some of Melbourne’s finest purveyors of guitar, pedal steel, keys, harp and rhythm section. Alex Hamilton & the Highway’s live show knows when to pull you in close and when to get the room moving.
With Alex will be Chelsea Hotel, a true local supergroup, made up of equal parts Foggy Notion and ex-Sin City members. These guys are quickly carving out a name for themselves with their country-inspired rhythm and blues and seriously electric live shows.
In times like these, everyone can use a shot in the arm of great music to bring back the good times, and Chelsea Hotel deliver in spades. Buy up your stock in these guys early, because they are only heading one way and that’s up. You might just have found one of your favourite bands at the Winter Warmer in the Chelsea Hotel.
Mister Sippy are already on everyone’s favourites list putting in huge performances at the St Kilda Blues Festival – they are southside legends for a reason. A swampy, harpy, hill-country blues n’ roots four-piece from Naarm, bringing a gritty mix of Fat Possum-style blues and ragged rock ’n’ roll swagger - equal parts sweat, soul and stomp.
Drawing influence from the likes of The Red Devils and R.L. Burnside, Mister Sippy channel the spirit of the juke joint with a live show that hits hard and doesn’t let up. Think gritty harmonica, humbucking guitars and grooves that keep rolling long after the first song.
It’s the kind of set that makes you forget the week, grab a beer and head straight for the dance floor.
