AAFT PD: Supporting Neurodiverse Families
About
An online professional development session presented by the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT).Presentation:
Supporting Neurodiverse Families with a Neuro-affirming Framework
Historically, research and clinical intervention have centred on the autistic individual, often overlooking the systemic dynamics within the neurodiverse family unit. This presentation shifts the focus, exploring the role of family therapy and providing a roadmap for supporting families through a neuro-affirming framework.
About the presenter:
Dr. Cindy Hsiang
PhD; Multigenerational Family Therapist; Registered Psychologist
Building upon her clinical experience with autistic individuals, Cindy’s shift into family therapy transformed her practice into a systemic endeavour, where her professional expertise now evolves through the lived experiences and relational dynamics of the neurodiverse families she supports.
Besides being a certified Multigenerational Family Therapist, Cindy is a registered psychologist, a Psychology Board approved supervisor, and a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. Spanning the public and private sectors across Australasia, Cindy’s practice is founded in a cross-cultural resonance. She bridges linguistic gaps by providing systemic support in both English and Mandarin, ensuring that families from diverse backgrounds receive care that is culturally nuanced.
Cindy’s doctoral research is the culmination of her clinical journey; it seeks to redefine how we support neurodiverse families by placing systemic connection at the heart of the therapeutic process, ensuring that the unique dynamics of each family unit are empowered.
