Protecting Children in Today’s World: A Parent Information Session
Presented by the Karnup Schools Network
Free Community Event
Creating a safe home environment for children requires more than good intentions—it requires knowledge, awareness, and proactive action.
Join Kristi McVee, former Detective Senior Constable, specialist child interviewer, and child abuse prevention educator, for an important and informative session designed to equip parents, carers, and trusted adults with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to better protect children.
Drawing on more than a decade of experience in Western Australia law enforcement investigating child sexual abuse, and nine years interviewing vulnerable children, Kristi provides clear, direct, and evidence-informed guidance on the realities of child safety in contemporary families and communities.
Session Topics Include
- How to initiate body safety conversations with children in age-appropriate ways
- Recognising the signs of grooming and online exploitation
- Understanding sextortion: what it is, how it occurs, and how to respond
- Child safety within the home, including sibling and family dynamics
- How to respond effectively when a child discloses harm
- Practical scripts and strategies for protective conversations
- Building confidence to act calmly and appropriately in challenging situations
- Live Q&A
The session will conclude with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions directly in a live Q&A discussion. All questions relating to child safety, online risks, disclosures, and protective practices are welcome.
This is an essential session for parents, carers, and all trusted adults involved in the care of children.
