The University Lodge Lyceum Evening is delighted to welcome Bob Jones, a distinguished Freemason and former Past Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria, who has combined leadership in Freemasonry with a fascinating career in Australian motor sport.
Masonic Career
Most Worshipful Brother Bob Jones served as Grand Master of Freemasons Victoria (the United Grand Lodge of Victoria) from 2010 to 2014; he has had a long and respected association with Freemasonry in Victoria. Over many decades he has served the Craft in numerous roles at lodge and Grand Lodge level, culminating in his election as Grand Master.
During his period as Grand Master he was involved in major structural and financial reforms within Freemasonry in Victoria, including work associated with the creation and development of Freemasons Foundation Victoria, the charitable arm of the organisation. During his leadership he promoted fellowship, education and community involvement within Victorian Freemasonry, and has continued to be a valued mentor and supporter of many lodges.
Professional and Business Life
Outside the Craft, Bob built a successful professional career in the automotive and engineering sector. His work in the motor industry naturally complemented his lifelong passion for motorsport and mechanical performance. His technical knowledge and entrepreneurial drive allowed him to become actively involved in racing during the 1990s.
Motor Racing Career
Bob Jones competed in Australian touring car events during the late 1980s and 1990s, driving powerful touring cars such as the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon in national competitions. His racing résumé includes participation in major Australian events including the legendary Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama Circuit, widely regarded as the greatest endurance race in Australian motor sport. Throughout the 1990s he competed in touring car championships and endurance races, including the Sandown 500 and other national events. His career included drives with teams such as John Sidney Racing and Paul Little Racing, and he campaigned cars like the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon in Australian touring car competitions.
The Bathurst race, first staged in 1963, has become an iconic endurance event at Mount Panorama and remains one of the most famous races in the world of touring cars.
Drawing on these experiences, Bob Jones will share personal stories from the track, insights into the pressures and excitement of endurance racing, and reflections on what it means to compete in such a legendary event.
