AAFT PD: Grit
About
An online professional development session presented by the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT).Presentation:
Maria uses the concept of Grit to refer to a quality that is a central attribute of clinicians, and clinical work as a whole, but that has not been discussed in the past.
The word grit has a double meaning. On the one hand, it refers to small loose particles of stone or sand reminding us that, as Bateson made us aware, it is in the small particulars where the significant moments of therapeutic work take place. On the other, grit refers to strength of character, to courage and resolve and, as such, it has connections with another critical – yet equally poorly researched – element according to the common factors model: the therapeutic style and its fitness with clients.
In this presentation, she explores grit from a systemic perspective and draws from her own experience as a clinician as well as from her experience supervising junior clinicians, who were in the early stages of the transition from training to the very actual vicissitudes of working as a therapist.
