Words Matter: Using Respectful Language, Disability Support
About
The language we use while supporting our consumers and in everyday life can either create inclusion or hold someone back. Facilitated by Vanessa Jessett, this engaging workshop invites support workers to build confidence in using respectful, inclusive, and empowering language when working alongside people with disability. You’ll explore how everyday words can either support independence or unintentionally reinforce bias, and you’ll learn practical ways to communicate that honour each person’s identity, preferences, and lived experience. Through real examples and clear guidance, the session helps you understand ableist language, person‑first and identity‑first terminology, and how to choose words that create trust, dignity, and genuine connection. If you want to strengthen your communication skills and ensure the people you support, feel respected and understood, this workshop offers a warm, practical space to grow.Perfect for disability workers, coordinators, or families.
Please note:
Attendance at this training is voluntary and staff will not be paid to attend. If you are hoping to attend during your work hours, you will need to discuss this with your coordinator or employer to see if arrangements can be agreed.
