Graphic Novels and the Real World
About
Graphic Novels and the Real WorldComic Books, Autobiography and History
Speakers: Mirranda Burton, Jamie Clennett and Gina Chadderton, chaired by Bernard Caleo
The comic book form is used as a narrative medium by these creators to tackle social, historical and personal histories: protest about the Vietnam War in Mirranda Burton’s Underground (Allen and Unwin 2021); Napoleon Bonaparte’s Tasmanian imprisonment in Jamie Clennett’s The Diemenois (Hunter Publishers Australia 2015); and growing up with an autistic sibling in Gina Chadderton’s Oh Brother (Penguin Books Australia 2026). Join these creators as they present illustrated readings from their work, then engage in a spirited discussion about comics and the real world, and how their books have enabled the two to converge and converse.
Presented by Rare Books Melbourne in partnership with The Melbourne Athenaeum Library.
