TREK MUSICALS IN CONCERT
About
Showcasing famous music theatre collaborations:Gilbert and Sullivan: Gilbert, the dramatist, and Sullivan, the composer, collaborated on 14 comic operas. Gilbert wrote witty, satiric libretti creating topsy-turvy worlds. Sullivan’s music conveys both humour and pathos. Gilbert and Sullivan were temperamentally incompatible yet artistically perfectly matched. Trek will showcase solos and choruses from shows including Mikado, Gondoliers, Yeomen of the Guard and Pirates of Penzance.
Lerner and Lowe: Another duo who were complete opposites but respected each other and developed a deep friendship. The partnership spanned 3 decades and they wrote 9 musicals. Solos and choruses from My Fair Lady, Paint Your Wagon and Brigadoon
Rogers and Hart: In this era, musicals were generally more revue-like with librettos that were little more than an excuse for comic turns and music cues. Rogers and Hart tried to raise the standard of the musical form in general. You will hear songs from lesser known musicals such as Babes in Arms, Boys from Syracruse, Jumbo and Blue Moon which was not written for a musical but became a popular ballad for many performers.
Rogers and Hammerstein: Rogers and Hammerstein had collaborated many years earlier when Rogers was involved in a varsity concert and Hammerstein was a judge. When Rogers and Harts’ collaboration collapsed, Rogers and Hammerstein came together as a duo. Even though their musicals contain cheerful and uplifting songs, their works seriously addressed issues such as racism, sexism and classism. Their partnership is said to have initiated the golden age of music theatre. In this concert you will hear songs and choruses from Oklahoma, King and I, Sound of Music and the lesser-known Flower Drum Song.
