The GMA is pleased to introduce a special event series for 2026, its 50th year, spotlighting the careers and accomplishments of distinguished alumni.
The first event in the series will feature UWA alumni Charlie Gunningham (1999) and Dr Katharine Giles (2007) in conversation with Thomas Murrell (1997). This iteration of the series will uncover knowledge from our guest speakers across three insightful topics:
1. What does leadership look like in their respective industries.
2. How they have built an idea into a successful venture.
3. The impact their unique approach can make in business.

Charlie Gunningham is one of Western Australia’s most influential startup and innovation leaders. With more than 25 years’ experience across entrepreneurship, investment, media and government, he is currently Chair of StartupWA, Head of Ecosystem Engagement at Meshpoints, and the Entrepreneur in Residence at VentureUWA.

Dr Katharine Giles is a medical doctor, investor and business leader working at the intersection of healthcare, innovation and commercialisation. She is the Managing Director and CEO of OncoRes Medical and a Venture Partner at Brandon Capital, with extensive experience scaling health and life sciences ventures.

Leading the conversation is Thomas Murrell, an award-winning broadcaster, business communicator and professional MC with more than 40 years’ experience in media, leadership and strategic communication. As an UWA MBA graduate, he is known for helping leaders communicate with clarity, confidence and impact.
