Manual Handling Equipment Masterclass

This practical session introduces occupational therapy students to the key concepts of commode prescription. Using a person-centred approached, students will consider how environmental and personal factors influence participation in personal care and how to effectively match commode features to support comfort, safety and independence in personal care.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the fundamental principles of commode prescription and the role of occupational therapy in supporting functional independence
Apply the Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model to assess individual needs and identify risks and barriers affecting participation in personal care tasks
Explore how commode features can be matched to an individual’s abilities and personal goals to optimise comfort, safety and usability

This session is tailored for fourth and final year occupational therapy students seeking to build confidence and practical skills in prescribing shower commodes to support independence, safety, dignity and quality of life for their future clients.
