Outline
Technological innovations inevitably outstrip the development of the law and the way lawyers and Judges approach the cases before them. The explosion in the use of generative artificial intelligence is a challenge which the Courts must face. This presentation will consider some of the difficulties Judges face in grappling with AI, and suggestions for lawyers and practitioners who front the Courts.

Justice Berna Collier was appointed as a Federal Court Judge on 8 February 2006 and a Judge of the Supreme Court and National Courts of Papua New Guinea in September 2011. Her Honour is also a part-time Deputy President of the Administrative Review Tribunal, an additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory, and a member of the Governing Council of the Queensland University of Technology. Prior to being appointed to the Federal Court, Her Honour was Clayton Utz Professor of Commercial Law at Queensland University of Technology, one of three national Commissioners of the Australian Securities and Investment Commission, and a director of the Australian Prudential Regulation. Her Honour was also a part-time Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission from 2007 until 2010.
