About
Parent Workshops: Cracking the Code: Understanding English Sounds and Letters
Would you like to better understand how English reading and spelling works so you can support your child at home?
Join us for a practical workshop focused on helping parents learn how the English language connects sounds (phonemes) with letters and letter patterns (graphemes), often called the alphabetic code.
These are the foundational skills taught to students in Prep to Year Two. However, if you are wanting to improve your own English skills and confidence, you are warmly encouraged to join us.
Jerry Wu will be attending to assist with translation and to explain how students are supported in developing their English skills at school. He will share how English is taught in small group settings, helping you better understand your child’s learning experience.
Why is this important?
English can be a challenging language because the same sound can be spelled in different ways, and letters can represent different sounds. Understanding these patterns will help you guide your child more confidently when they are reading or writing.
What will you learn?
• How English sounds are linked to letters and groups of letters
• Why words are not always spelled the way they sound
• Common sound–letter patterns used in early reading
• Simple ways to help your child practise at home
This workshop is especially helpful for families who speak a language other than English at home. By improving your understanding of how English works, you will be better equipped to explain, support, and practise literacy skills with your child. It is also a great opportunity to build or strengthen your own English skills in a safe and supportive environment.
Working together for your child’s success
When parents understand the English alphabetic code, it becomes easier to support classroom learning. This creates a strong connection between home and school, helping children build confidence and succeed in reading and writing.
Our goal:
To support parents in understanding English so they can effectively help their children develop strong literacy skills, while also building a supportive and inclusive Junior School community.
Warm Regards,
Karen Sutcliffe
