Making her debut in 2022 with her raw and heartbreaking EP Dancing for Strangers, folk-rock singer-songwriter Miranda vs Arizona is back in a big way with her debut album Big Smoke. Capturing city vs country, head vs heart, Big Smoke is a deeply personal, concept-driven album exploring the experience of feeling caught between head and heart, the comfort and chaos of city life, and the longing for the freedom and slowness of a different life outside the city. It reflects themes of place, love, heartbreak, and identity, documenting her 20’s in what feels like a scrapbook of experiences, relationships and emotional challenges. Through both intimate acoustic tracks and expansive, psychedelic sounds, the album playfully and fiercely captures her emotional evolution — from loving and leaving people and places to discover if the grass is, in fact, greener on the other side.Supported by Magandjin/Brisbane locals Billie Star and Super Hotel, Miranda vs Arizona and her band will be bringing you Big Smoke live from Hunting Ground Studios on what will be a very special evening, Saturday May 9th.
Super Hotel is your Magandjin/Brisbane band for meanders, sits and stands. Their bent blends of observational poetry and alternative country rock are said to palliate your ailments by a sort of merry melancholy, like taking a wonderful wander by a river brown. Having recently released their debut EP, self-recorded in a time of personal upheaval and riddled with hazy melodic riffs and honest vocal lilts, the Hotel leans into loss and losing with a sense of warmth and dry humour: “Do not wail your buffering, you can sail your suffering."
Billie Star (Nice Biscuit) only writes sad songs but she is trying to change. Rooted in 60s country nostalgia she laments the tides of life to try to understand friendship, love, and loss. Her first solo EP “One Day (When I Have the Time)”, co produced by Alistar Richardson, will be released soon.
