Caring for Pet Birds
About
Gain the knowledge and confidence to care for pet birds properly. This comprehensive training covers essential husbandry, balanced nutrition, common health conditions, and appropriate cage design, with a strong focus on parrots, lorikeets, and parakeets commonly kept in Australian homes. You’ll learn how to recognise early warning signs of illness and behavioural stress, and understand when intervention is needed, critical for birds that often hide symptoms until advanced stages. The course also highlights trusted avian veterinary options across Western Australia, helping you build a reliable care network before problems arise.
We address the absolute “no-go” zones in bird care, such as toxic foods (e.g. avocado), dangerous household items (like Teflon cookware), and airborne hazards including incense and fumes, ensuring your home environment is safe. Beyond the basics, we explore what it truly means to welcome a bird into your family: time commitment, daily cleaning, enrichment needs, and how to avoid caregiver burnout while maintaining high welfare standards.
You’ll gain practical guidance on selecting safe, enriching toys and where to source them, along with advice on ethical pathways to acquire your bird, supporting responsible breeders, rescues, and rehoming options. By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped to create a safe, stimulating, and sustainable environment that supports your bird’s physical health, mental wellbeing, and natural behaviours for life.
